Dunlop/Dunlap           

The names Dunlop and Dunlap

Dun Lop (meaning fort at the bend) was the name give to a stronghold built on a hill in East Ayshire, Scotland.   The hill is still known as Dunlop Hill, and the family took its name from that landmark. 

 

Notable Canadian Dunlops and Dunlaps

Clarence Rupert "Larry" Dunlap  (1908-2003) air marshal, Canada's Chief of the Air Staff 1962-1964, deputy commander in chief of NORAD 1964-1967

Blake Robert Dunlop  NHL hockey player 1974-1984.  He played for the St. Louis Blues 1979-1983.

David Alexander Dunlap (1863-1924) lawyer, mine executive, Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines was active in public service.  David Dunlap Observatory in Toronto was built by his family.

William "Tiger" Dunlop  (1792-1848) Canada Company land speculator and colourful character.

Places in Canada named Dunlop 

The places found in Canada bearing the name Dunlop are remote in some way and beautiful.  Dunlop Lake in northern Ontario is attractive for fishing and canoeing,  as is less known Dunlop Bay on Matagami Lake in northern Quebec.  In B.C.'s coastal waters, Dunlop Point on Hornby Island has a wonderful, peaceful view.  

 

Dunlop Dunlap genealogy in Canada

The brothers James and John Dunlop went from the village of Dunlop in Ayrshire, Scotland and settled in what became Lancaster, Ontario.  There they built the first store to serve that community. See their page for the rest of the story.

A Dunlop family from Paisley, Scotland settled in Almonte Ontario and Brockville, Ontario then moved on to Michigan, U.S.A.  Almonte Dunlops may be found outside this site by scrolling down to Dunlop.
